An automatic garage door is one of the heaviest moving objects in most homes. Five minutes once a month is all it takes to make sure it is safe.
1. The auto-reverse test
Lay a piece of timber or a roll of paper towel flat on the floor in the doorway and close the door. It should touch the object and reverse. If it does not, stop using the motor and call us.
2. Safety beams
If you have beams near the floor, start closing the door and wave something through the beam. The door should stop and reverse. Wipe the lenses clean while you are there.
3. Cables and springs
Look, but do not touch. Frayed cables, gaps in springs or rust are signs to book a spring and cable check.
4. Balance
Pull the manual release with the door closed and lift it halfway by hand. A balanced door stays put. If it drops or shoots up, it needs adjusting.
5. Remote security
Keep remotes out of reach of young children, and out of sight in your car. If one goes missing, have the codes cleared. See remotes and keypads.
