Roller door or sectional door?

Cost, headroom, noise, insulation and looks compared, so you can pick the right door for your garage.

If you are replacing a garage door on the Gold Coast, the first decision is usually between a roller door and a sectional door. Both are good doors. The right one depends on your garage, your budget and how you use the space.

How each door works

A roller door is a single flexible steel curtain that coils around a drum above the opening. A spring inside the drum balances the weight. A sectional door is made of hinged horizontal panels that run on rollers up and back along tracks under the ceiling, balanced by torsion or extension springs.

Cost

Roller doors are generally the cheaper option to buy and install. A standard double roller door typically costs noticeably less than a double sectional door in a similar finish. See our pricing guide for typical Gold Coast ranges.

Headroom and space

Roller doors need space above the opening for the drum, but nothing across the ceiling. That makes them ideal for garages with exposed beams, storage racks or low ceilings. Sectional doors need clear ceiling space for the tracks, though low-headroom kits help where space is tight.

Noise and insulation

Sectional doors run more quietly because the panels roll on nylon wheels rather than sliding in guides. Insulated panels also keep out more heat, which matters if there is a bedroom above the garage or you use it as a gym or workshop through a Gold Coast summer.

Sealing and weather

Sectional doors seal more tightly at the sides and top. Roller doors can be fitted with brush seals to reduce gaps. For homes on exposed coastal or elevated sites, both types come in wind-rated versions.

Looks

Roller doors have a classic ribbed look and come in a wide range of colours. Sectional doors offer more design options, including flush panels and timber-look finishes, which is why they are popular on architect-designed homes.

Our quick rule of thumb

  • Choose a roller door if budget and ceiling space matter most.
  • Choose a sectional door if noise, insulation or street appeal matter most.
  • Either way, add a motor with battery backup for storm season.
