Repair or replace your garage door?

A straight answer on when a repair makes sense and when your money is better spent on a new door.

We get asked this on almost every job. Our honest answer: most doors are worth repairing, until they are not. Here is how we decide.

Usually worth repairing

  • Broken springs or cables on an otherwise sound door
  • A roller door that has lost tension
  • Worn rollers, hinges or seals
  • A failed motor on a door in good condition
  • Minor dents that do not affect how the door runs

Usually worth replacing

  • Rust through the curtain or panels, common on older coastal doors
  • A one-piece tilt door with a rotting frame
  • A door so badly bent it no longer runs true
  • Repair costs approaching half the price of a new door
  • A door that cannot take a modern motor or safety features

The street appeal factor

The garage door is often the largest single element of a home's frontage. If you are selling or renovating, a new door in a current colour can lift the whole facade for a relatively modest cost.

What we do

We quote the repair first. If we think replacement is better value, we explain why and quote both so you can choose. See our pricing guide for typical costs of each.
