A garage door that suddenly gets louder is telling you something. Here are the six causes we find most often across the Gold Coast.
1. Dry rollers and hinges
A squeal or screech usually means dry metal on metal. A light spray of silicone or garage-door-specific lubricant on rollers and hinges often fixes it. Avoid thick grease, which collects sand and dust.
2. Sand and grit in the tracks
Common near the beach. Wipe tracks and guides with a dry cloth and the grinding often disappears.
3. Loose fixings
Doors vibrate, and fixings work loose over time. Rattles often go away once brackets are tightened. Leave spring brackets alone, as they are under tension.
4. Worn rollers
Older steel rollers wear flat and clunk along the track. Replacing them with sealed nylon rollers makes a sectional door dramatically quieter.
5. Lost tension on a roller door
A roller door that drags or bangs at the bottom has often lost drum tension. This is a job for a technician. See garage door repairs.
6. A tired motor
If the door is quiet when you lift it by hand but loud on the motor, the motor's gears or chain may be worn. A modern belt or DC opener is much quieter. See motors and openers.
